What is Bitcoin ASOL (Average Spent Output Lifespan)

BTC ASOL, or Average Spent Output Lifespan, is an on-chain metric that measures the mean age (in days) of all Bitcoin transaction outputs that have been spent on a given day or across a specific timeframe. The metric works by calculating the lifespan of each spent UTXO (unspent transaction output) from the moment it was originally created to when it is eventually spent, with transactions less than one hour old excluded from the calculation to filter out noise. For example, if three coins created 100 days, 60 days, and 5 days ago are spent on the same day, ASOL would equal 55 days—the average of those lifespans. This metric is particularly valuable because it reveals the behavioral composition of the market by highlighting the balance between short-term and long-term holder spending patterns, with low ASOL values (typically 30-50 days) indicating younger coin movement and normal day-to-day trading activity, while elevated ASOL spikes (60+ days) signal that dormant, older coins are being moved—often by long-term holders realizing profits.
